A characteristic feature of wood is its tendency to absorb moisture quickly.

Lately special ship lacquer gained popularity for wood, specially designed for use in constant humidity. It is also called yacht.

Initially, this tool only processed the outer surfaces of the wooden hull of river and sea sailing ships.

In the classic version, yacht varnish is prohibited for indoor use due to the presence of hazardous substances (toluene and xylene) in its composition. Classification of varnishes is carried out according to two criteria: appearance and chemical composition. According to the first sign, the substances are divided into glossy and matte. The matte finish is not so catchy, and it takes less time to clean it. The bases thus treated are practical, hiding contaminants well.

  • Alkyd. It is the most common yacht varnish for outdoor woodwork. It has good resistance to all kinds of external influences, possessing the ability to deeply absorb into the surface being treated. The disadvantages of the substance include its toxicity, which persists for a long time after application. Alkyd formulations are for outdoor use only.
  • Alkyd-urethane. Due to the presence of a sufficient amount of alkyd compounds, the varnish acquires the ability to withstand the weather vicissitudes. Cures the substance quickly enough - within 5-6 hours. Due to the high toxicity during operation, a respirator and gloves must be used to avoid poisoning the body. Alkyd-urethane compounds are used only in street conditions.
  • Urethane Alkyd. Due to the introduction of urethane plasticizers, the volatility of toxins is markedly reduced. The resulting film is not afraid of significant temperature changes.
  • Acrylate. Water is used as a base here, so the substance is almost harmless. It is this fact that makes it quite expensive, since the environmental friendliness of the product is combined with the strength inherent in classic yacht varnishes. Acrylate formulations have no restrictions on use. At the same time, they are not able to fully fulfill the initial role in protecting wooden ships.

Note! The urethane variety of yacht varnish can be safely used for decorating homes (for example, to paint heated floors).

Coating characteristics

The following properties are inherent in yacht varnish of any type:

  • burn resistance
  • low abrasion
  • chemical neutrality
  • increased moisture resistance.

Depending on the chemical composition of the varnish, individual characteristics may have a greater or lesser severity. For example, the wear resistance of water-based materials is not so high. On the other hand, plasticizers in acrylate compositions make it possible to obtain with their help a more elastic finish film.

Packing method

Manufacturers of yacht varnishes pack their products in cans or spray cans. The latter option is more convenient when applying, as this does not require a roller or brush. Aerosol allows you to achieve good uniformity of the dispersed layer of the desired thickness.

The weak sides of the varnish in the cans include a small amount of packaging and high cost (a means for varnishing a similar volume in a can will cost an order of magnitude cheaper).

As practice shows, it is more convenient to apply glossy compositions to a tree by spraying, and matte ones by a traditional brush or roller.

Application technology

Despite the declared high characteristics of deck varnishes, to obtain the proper quality of the decorative layer, it is necessary to strictly follow the recommendations for application.

If there is a layer of old varnish on the base intended for finishing, it is necessary to get rid of it. Otherwise, the new layer will begin to swell and crack.

High-quality varnishing is possible only on a well-dried wooden surface. Permissible level of wood moisture is up to 20%. Having dried the base, it should be primed with a liquid with special antiseptic additives.

Note! In order for the surface to acquire a certain shade, the varnish must be diluted with a suitable dye in composition.

In order to primer, yacht varnishes are sometimes bred. You can dilute the composition containing alkyd resins with white spirit or a special diluent recommended by the manufacturer. For basic finishes, no dilution is required.

The strength of the finish is ensured by applying 2-3 layers of varnish. As tools, usually use a brush or roller. Spray agent is applied by aerosol spray.

When applying the first layer, you need to move parallel to the wood fibers. Each subsequent application is carried out in the transverse direction to the previous one. Between the layers should be paused to dry.

Usually, after the first application, they take a break for 5-6 hours, and after the second - for a day. If work is carried out indoors, it is allowed to use it only after 48 hours.

Determining the material for varnishing, you should focus on the type of surface to be treated and the place of work.

With the help of yacht acrylic or polyurethane varnish, garden and country furniture made of natural wood is often treated. We are talking about pine tables, benches, swings, arbors. The best option in this case is a matte finish, which is distinguished by aesthetics and pleasant colors.

As for the processing of flooring from pine boards, the classic alkyd compounds are not suitable here. Even if after processing it is good to ventilate the room, this will not protect against harmful toxins (they continue to evaporate for several months). A safer option looks with urethane-alkyd yacht varnish.

It is not surprising that yacht varnish began to be widely used for the protective and decorative coating of wooden and wood-based materials used in difficult weather conditions.   • A special place in shipbuilding is occupied by the issue of counteracting fouling of the underwater part of the vessel with seaweed, shells and other microorganisms, which leads to a significant excessive consumption of fuel. Mold and mildew resistance achieved by the addition of biocides. However, you can not expect much from them if the surface is constantly under the influence of nutrients. Acrylate

Acrylate is made from water-soluble ingredients that are unable to worsen people's well-being. Therefore, the material is allowed to process the surfaces of wooden objects located indoors. The composition is poorly resistant to the damaging effects of aggressive weather and climatic conditions, therefore, it is freely used for processing residential interiors. And the marking “yacht” is a marketing move showing the high quality of such products, although in fact this varnish is not shipborne. This is the most expensive of the four existing species.

Application Features

Before varnishing, wooden boards are freed from accumulated contaminants, cleaned of settled dust and polished. Then they are treated with a compatible primer mixture, the dried layer of which is sanded with fine-grained abrasive paper. After cleaning the resulting debris and preparing the wooden surface, a varnish material is created, the components of which are mixed and supplemented with solvents until a uniform consistency occurs, as well as the degree of viscosity indicated by the manufacturer.

The lacquer coating already present on the product is removed when cracks are detected on its layer. And the renewal of wood makes you finish a small area of ​​an inconspicuous area. If for several days there are no swelling and exfoliation of the dried substance, the remaining surface is varnished. How to use

Yacht varnish is sold in iron cans of various sizes and in the form of an aerosol.

The composition is used, observing the sequence of steps:

  • clean and dry the wood surface well
  • treat with antiseptic composition and primer,
  • apply varnish with a roller or brush along wood fibers,
  • apply a second coat of varnish across the fibers,
  • wait two days
  • the floor is ready to use.

Readiness for use is checked by the degree of humidity of the floor. A figure below 20% indicates that the varnish is dry.

Primed surfaces are recommended to increase the adhesion of wood and paintwork. Antiseptic treatment improves the moisture protective properties of wood and reduces the risk of pests, mold and mildew.

Most often, varnish is applied in 3 layers, each of which, after complete drying, must be treated with a fine-grained skin. You can clarify the drying period of the composition on the package.

To avoid delamination of the coating during operation, mix thoroughly before application. If the substance is too viscous, it can be diluted with white spirit. Solvent fraction should not exceed 5% of the total amount of paintwork.
