Decorative plaster in the interior: features, types, coating care

The development of modern technology is reflected in the construction industry. Today, along with traditional, conventional types of wall and ceiling finishes, the use of decorative plaster is gaining popularity. The theme is fresh and unbroken, due to this decor the interior becomes special. We understand the main nuances of this material, study its advantages, disadvantages, varieties, relevant color solutions and design.

Features

Decorative plaster is usually understood as finishing plaster material. Its main distinguishing feature is the texture. In contrast to the coarse starting coating, which is a preparatory layer and even for plaster, the finish in question has a soft and delicate texture.

Decorative variety for the interior decoration of coatings is intended for decorating walls, ceilings, ledges, niches, columns and other design features of the premises.

The main component of decorative plaster is a binder. In addition, the composition includes various additives that determine the decorative and operational qualities of the stucco mixture. This is a separate type of plaster, which is not applied for leveling. Such material is an alternative to classic and liquid wallpaper, painting, wall panels, drywall, laminate, other wall and ceiling cladding.

Decorative plaster is highly plastic. It is convenient and comfortable to use. A characteristic feature of this finish is the presence of relief. It makes plaster material special. The pattern is beautiful, consistent with the fashion trends of interior compositions and is almost always individual. These factors determine the relevance of using decorative plaster instead of conventional cladding.

Such mixtures differ from starting varieties in that they do not shrink after drying. Subject to application technology, they will not crack, fall off surfaces. Most of these mixtures have an environmental basis. Therefore, they are harmless to the human body.

An interesting nuance is the fact that decorative plaster can be made independently from ordinary putty. The composition is quite simple and does not require large financial costs.

They can be used in any room in the home. Decorative plaster coatings can decorate the walls and ceilings in the living room, bedroom, children's room, hallway, corridor, office, home library. They are applicable in decorating the space of a glazed balcony or loggia. In this case, the mixture can be painted in any color, they can be supplemented with additives (for example, marble chips, mother of pearl or silverfish).

Advantages and disadvantages

Decorative plaster used to decorate the interior has many advantages.

  • It is produced on modern equipment from high quality raw materials. Due to this, it is distinguished by high operational characteristics.
  • She is aesthetically attractive. Any interior looks stylish, beautiful and appropriate with such a decor. At the same time, the texture of the textured plaster does not limit the number of furniture details.
  • Regardless of the type of print, it is expressive. With different design, this decor fits into the interior of the home according to the chosen direction of style.
  • Stucco-based decorative cladding has a different form of release. You can choose a convenient option for yourself, taking into account financial opportunities and your own preferences.
  • Such decoration can be a stylish accent or a full-fledged interior decoration of a room. With it, you can zone the space of the room.

  • Decorative coating is able to bring the desired mood into the interior. With it, you can make the room stylish and cozy.
  • Due to the used shade and a certain effect of the material, you can visually increase the height and width of the walls, erase the clear boundaries of the ceilings.
  • Textured plaster mix simplifies surface lining. It allows you to approach the decoration of space creatively, revealing all the potential.
  • Decorative plaster is compatible with other finishes. You can combine it with wallpaper, wall panels, sheathing and even stretch fabric inserts in drywall constructions that move onto the wall.
  • It is a durable material. It is resistant to negative environmental factors, temperature extremes and sunlight. With careful care and maintenance, it will last more than 10 years.
  • Plaster mixes are diverse. Due to different additives, they differ in a certain effect. This fact allows you to perform the desired pattern on the coating layer, without the help of specialists.
  • This material has thermal insulation properties. It additionally insulates the floors on which it is applied.

One cannot but mention the disadvantages of decorative plaster.

  • She is really durable. However, it does not provide for significant mechanical stress. Strong impact will result in chips or scratches.
  • Not every composition is durable. Sometimes for this it is necessary to cover the interior plaster with water-based varnish, having previously diluted it with water.
  • Good material with a special effect is expensive. If you add special trowels with the desired relief to this, the finish can cost a round sum.
  • Care for a relief surface is not easy. You cannot just vacuum the planes, saving them dust. Removing contaminants will also be problematic.
  • The consumption of decorative interior plaster is more than classic analogues. At the same time, marriage is also possible, so you will have to buy material with a margin.
  • This finish does not tolerate hacking. If you drag out the workflow, the pattern in all areas will be different. In this case, the layer of the applied mixture may differ.

All existing types of decorative plaster can be classified according to the form of release. In the modern construction market, interior stucco products for interior work today are presented in the form of a powder mixture and finished mass.

The first option requires preliminary mixing of the composition with water at room temperature in the right proportions. In the second case, this is a mass that does not need to be diluted. Often it is already painted, which is not the case with the dry analogue, which has a predominantly basic color. However, this factor gives it great advantages, allowing staining of any degree of intensity.

The composition of the interior plaster can be of several types.

  • Mineralbased on cement. Differs in plasticity, suitable for finishing mineral types of substrates.
  • Acrylicnamed for the main component (acrylic resin). Suitable for floors of any type, has a high viscosity.
  • Silicate made on the basis of liquid glass. Breathable universal plaster.
  • Silicone, modification based on synthetic resins. One of the best varieties for finishing interior floors.

Colors and Design

The color schemes of the interior plaster are varied. They can be limited by two factors: the degree of illumination of a particular room in the home and its size. Otherwise, everything depends on the presence of taste and creative approach to the design of walls and ceilings.

For the ceiling, they try to choose a white color and a shade of ivory. Recently, bleached gray, decorated with a silver sheen, has been added to them.

For walls, applying a white hue is impractical. Beige, marble tones are popular here. However, not all so simple: in choosing a color, one should rely on the chosen style and its business cards. For example, if a loft style is chosen, the color of the finish imitating brick or stone will resemble a natural material. That is - it is gray, mustard, brick tones.

If you want to show unity with the ecological style, choose beige, sand tones. In some lines there is a stylization made in pinkish, gray-blue and even blue tones. Popular colors, in addition to white, are green, olive, blue. Black color is not able to fully convey the beauty of the relief. However, it can be used in minimal quantities (for example, for drawing).

Decorating plaster is a special issue. Let's make a reservation right away: there are two ways to design interior plaster. In the first case, this is the implementation of a relief pattern by forcing a non-frozen plaster layer. Here, textured rollers are used, wrapping them with clothesline, cling film, using crumpled newspapers, special trowels, fingers, moldings, stencils and other devices.

In another case, the decoration is more complicated. First perform the first decorative layer. Then in the right place by applying mass perform volumetric pattern. It can have a different size, relief and theme. Such drawings are created by professionals with artistic and sculptural skills.

Often shells or paints are used for such decoration, covering the created pattern with them. Subjects are different. This can be a picture of ancient times, floral or floral composition, stylized ornaments, the effect of volumetric sculptures. It all depends on the chosen direction of design.

Advantages of decorative plaster

Stucco in the interior is in special demand among owners of private houses. This is due to a number of advantages that decorative mixtures have:

  • No need for perfect wall alignment - minor defects and cracks will be qualitatively filled with an elastic composition. But before application, the surface must be treated with a primer in 1 or 2 layers, depending on the level of moisture absorption of the base material.
  • The plastic composition is convenient to use - it is easier for them to decorate complex structures (arches, niches, round columns, etc.).
  • Low level of moisture absorption - it is allowed to apply in rooms with high humidity and any temperature regime.
  • High strength characteristics - provide resistance to abrasion and mechanical stress, so the coating can last more than a dozen years.
  • Lack of joints and seams - the effect of a monolithic surface is created.

Where is it better to use a textured surface?

Decorative plasters are used for decoration of any premises. However, there are some recommendations regarding the use of mixtures of certain types:

  • For children's and sleeping rooms, it is advisable to use compounds that do not contain synthetic resins. When applied, acute forms should be avoided.
  • Walls in bathrooms and kitchens need to be plastered with moisture resistant materials.
  • Mixtures for hallways, bedrooms and other rooms are selected taking into account the future interior design, the prevailing colors of the furniture (if it has already been purchased) and other points that may affect the overall architectural concept.

Fields of application of decorative plaster

Plaster is used in the interior of rooms and buildings for various purposes. It is in great demand among owners of residential buildings and apartments, but it is often used for wall and ceiling decoration in various public, commercial and government institutions.

Plaster mixes are used not only for decorating walls and ceilings, they are often used to focus on individual architectural elements of the premises - columns, arches, false fireplaces, niches, recesses, etc. They create accent areas on walls and ceilings - Venetian stucco with a glossy finish is usually chosen for these purposes.

The decorative mixture is used not only in the interior, but also in the decoration of facades. For external wall decoration, compositions with a rougher texture are usually chosen - these include Bark beetle, Lamb, and Mosaic.

Plastering materials, which allow you to create different patterns, are used for facades much less often and the structuring process is simpler - with conventional and structural rollers followed by monophonic painting.

Types of decorative plaster

Depending on the constituent components, various decorative plasters can be used in the interior, but the following types are especially popular:

  • Mineral - is based on Portland cement and mineral fillers. It is characterized by a low price and versatility of application - with its help it is possible to perform internal and external plastering. Available in gray and white, therefore, after application and hardening, surface painting is required.

  • Silicone is based on the composition of silicone resins, due to which the mixture has good ductility and low moisture absorption, which allows it to be used for decoration of unheated and rooms with high humidity conditions. It is characterized by neutral electrostaticity (does not attract dust and other pollution), decent indicators of vapor permeability.

  • Silicate - a stucco mixture based on potassium glass, which is characterized by increased strength characteristics, good elasticity and optimal vapor permeability. But the cost of this material is appropriate. Available in finished form in buckets.

  • Acrylic - is made using acrylic resins, which provides good elasticity and resistance to deformation shrinkage, which cause the formation of a network of cracks on the surface. Also, mixtures of this type are characterized by increased moisture resistance, mechanical strength, good adhesion to bases of all kinds. Cons: low vapor permeability and a tendency to pollution due to high electrostaticity.

Finish options

The construction market offers many types of stucco mixtures, depending on the final surface, but the most popular are:

  • “Bark beetle” - the texture is formed due to the content of large insoluble mineral fractions in the composition. It resembles a surface damaged by a wood-beetle bug.

  • “Lamb” - also contains insoluble fractions, an interesting granular coating is obtained.

  • "Mosaic" - consists of plain or multi-colored stone chips, which allows you to create an original coating.

  • Structural plaster - the surface is formed by special tools (rollers, stencils) or improvised means (sponges, brushes, etc.).

Aftercare

Decorative plaster coating is moisture resistant and resistant to abrasion, therefore, does not need special care during operation. If necessary, it can be washed with water with the addition of detergent or simply wiped with a dry cloth or sponge.

To increase the wear resistance and resistance to various aggressive substances, the plastered surface that has gained strength can be additionally coated with acrylic varnish or artificial wax. But in this case, it is important to consider that it is impossible to clean such a coating with the use of products containing chemical solvents. For washing, you can use water with soap.

The most successful solution when choosing a material for interior decoration will be decorative plaster. The finished textured coating looks much more impressive and richer compared to traditional wallpaper or simply painted surface. The use of ready-made mixtures allows you to transform the design of any room, but to obtain the desired result, you need to choose the best composition for the overall design concept.

Decorative plaster is a leader among finishing materials.

According to interior designers and architects, this is an ideal material for interior decoration, because

unlike paint, tile and wallpaper, it not only “looks rich”, but is always unique and able to give the interior an individuality and a touch of luxury.

For interior design of walls, you should not use dry plaster, presented in stores of building materials, but liquid, ready to use.

It is the second option that allows you to reproduce any texture and color scheme in accordance with the ideas of the customer or designer.
Dry plasters can provide a very limited color range, therefore they are used, as a rule, on facades. In addition, ready-made plasters provide higher aesthetic, operational and tactile characteristics of the finish coating, as well as ease of application.

The higher the price of decorative plaster, the more exquisite effects it will turn out to realize with its help:

  • smoothness and unique pattern of noble marble,
  • granular granularity
  • the exquisite texture of travertine (Tibur stone),
  • smoothness and overflow of shades of silk,
  • the aristocratic intricacy of velvet,
  • Shine of precious metals.

Wall Decoration Benefits

You can’t do without decorative plaster to create old-fashioned interiors, because there is simply no better solution for artificially aging walls. Amazingly cracked wall covering, traces of corrosion, patina coating - all these effects are inconceivable without a solution for plastering.

Replacing decorative plaster with paint will not only “cheapen” the interior visually, but also reduce the number of exquisite design options by a hundred times. The apparent savings will lead to additional costs, because over time, the paint will begin to crack and peel off the walls, and this will not happen with the plaster for at least ten years.

Compared to paper wallpaper, smooth decorative plaster looks much more prestigious. In addition, you do not need to calculate the number of rolls and take care that they are from the same batch (due to the difference in shades). Wallpapering does not do without fitting the picture, so there will be a lot of scraps. Because of the uneven walls of the canvas, you will have to overlap, because that when glued end-to-end they "lie" crookedly. A repeating wallpaper pattern initially reduces the cost of design, giving the impression of seriality. Not to mention the fact that the edges bending over time make such walls sloppy.

An ideal alternative to wallpaper from the point of view of convenience, versatility and economy is decorative plaster, which you can use without worrying about the little things listed.

The sale of this amazing decoration material in Moscow and other Russian cities is carried out through the Clavel-Trade trading network. The range of decorative plasters is regularly updated with new types. You can choose the effect, order the product, get acquainted with its characteristics and see the photo of finished coatings in the interiors on our website.

Texture types

Decorative plaster differs not only in composition, but also in various tactile properties of the coating.

Which interior plaster is the smoothest to the touch: Venetian, textured or structural?

One of the most pleasant to touch is the Venetian. It is used to create a perfectly even, smooth finish. Using a lime-based compound, it is easy to imitate a marble surface with its inherent warmth of stone and mirror smoothness. Unlike prices for the most budgetary finishing with natural stone, the cost of walls with Venetian plaster is lower by an order of magnitude.

Whether the surface is very or slightly rough in the case of applying structural plaster depends on the size of the filler particles included: silicate, dolomite, barite or marble. If they do not exceed 1 mm, then you will not be able to feel the relief with your hand. Larger fillers (from 1 to 3 mm) will make the coating embossed and slightly rough to the touch.

Due to mineral additives, structural plaster masses have high strength indicators, so they are rarely used for interior decoration. They are mainly used to cover facades and walls in rooms with high traffic: in corridors and porches.

Textured plaster creates a very smooth and pleasant to the touch relief. It is formed due to the high viscosity and ductility of such a material. Particles with a diameter of 0.1 to 0.5 mm included in its formulation are responsible for the microrelief of the coating, however, it will not be rough: it is only velvety.

Is it expensive to finish the walls with decorative plaster?

What is the price of a topcoat?

The first thing you should pay attention to is the thickness of the layer. Everything is simple here - the more abundant we plaster the walls, the greater the consumption of material. For a rough calculation, you can use the following formula - 1 additional millimeter of coating thickness requires one kilogram of plaster per square meter.

The second is the number of layers needed to create a specific effect. In this case, the master’s labor costs and the time required to complete the entire “pie” increase. each new layer requires thorough drying.

Independent wall plastering can be cheap, but then you will have to forget about creating an exquisite designer interior.

The quality of their execution also affects the cost of finishing work - the higher the qualification of the finisher and the more time he spends to create the desired effect, the higher the cost of execution.

The complexity of the decoration project and the exclusivity of the effect will require additional costs. The same applies to the color saturation, because the more intense the color of the walls, the more colorant will be needed.
